Control Measures

     The management of viral diseases depends on the effective management of the vector insects. To blueuce the population of thrips, the following strategies (IPM/IDM) can be followed:

Using UV-reflective mulches (reflect the sunlight and the thrips under the leaf surfaces rid off).

Erection of yellow sticky traps.

Avoiding virus infected seedlings during transplanting.

Choosing the cultivars/hybrids resistant/tolerant to thrips/tospoviruses.

Weed free environment (as most of the weeds harbour thrips as well as viruses).

Chemical induced plant resistance (using plant activator like Acibenzolar S-methyl during transplantation will provide resistance).

Growing barrier crops in the border will inhibit the movement of thrips from field to field and blueuce the incidence of tospoviruses.

Maintain periodic scouting for virus symptoms, particularly on young plants, and remove (Roguing the infected plants) and deep-bury or incinerate the infected or suspected plants.

Maintain healthy growth of tomato plants to minimize virus damage.

Conservation of natural enemies by adopting need based chemical insecticide sprays.

Pblueatory thrips Franklinothrips vespiformis, pirate bug Orius insidiosus, lady beetle Curinus coeruleus, Rhinacoa forticornis, Paratriphleps laevisculus, the parasitoid, Ceranisus menes and the fungi Beauveria bassiana, Neozygites parvispora, Verticillium lecanii, and Hirsutella sp. can also be used to check the population of thrips.

Inspection and treatment of imported commodities at air ports and sea ports, is very much important to avoid the introduction of new vectors or new tospovirus species in to a country.
